PAT Testing

PAT Testing is the Test & Inspection of all items that can be plugged in, this also includes extension leads, in addition to this fixed items require testing such as Water Heaters, Bathroom Heaters and Heated Towel Rails.

PAT Testing is not a legal requirement but regulations such as, EAWR 1989, HASAW 1974 and PUWER 1998 place the responsibility on companies and Landlords to maintain Electrical Equipment in a safe working condition, current PAT Testing is also often a requirement by Insurance companies.

The Code of Practice and HSE give recommended retest dates for items to be PAT Tested, the most common retest dates are annually but this can vary depending on use, environment and type of item being tested, again this is not a compulsory timescale but complying with these guides is showing that you are attempting to maintain your equipment in a safe working condition.

What does PAT Testing consist of:

Visual inspection:

  • Check flex condition
  • Check plugs & equipment for signs of overheating
  • Check plugs wired correctly
  • Check fuse rating

Selection of tests depending on equipment being tested:

  • Earth continuity test
  • Insulation resistance
  • Polarity
  • Earth leakage
